The importance of light in sports facilities
The light plays an important part
In sports facilities the light has an important role - it shall meet the players’ needs, but at the same time not be a disturbance. As an aid for light planning and installation of sports lighting, the European standard EN 12193 is applicable. The standard describes, amongst others, that consideration should be given to glare, colour rendering and the illuminance in differing grid points, partly in the main area for the sport and partly in the peripheral area around the playing surface. The requirements for lighting are different depending on the sport concerned. There are three different classes for each sport based on if it is school sports, training and competition as well as local, regional or international.
Sports lighting that passes ball tests
When there is a requirement for the luminaire to be extra durable against ball impacts, it is tested according to VDE 0710-13, a so-called ball test. In order to pass the standard test the luminaire must withstand 36 shots from three different directions at 60 km/h with a calibrated handball with a diameter of 187 mm without any parts coming loose or that the IP classification is affected.
