Töölön Meander is a unique luxury residential building located in Taka-Töölö, Helsinki, Finland, on the shores of Taivallahti in a historic barrack area. The building was designed by the world-renowned architect Steven Holl, who is known for his passion for light, nature, and their many expressions. Holl's distinctive design style is clearly evident in Meander, where the sculptural architecture meets practical solutions with respect for the environment and nature. In Finland, Holl is best known for his work on the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Meander follows in this tradition with its harmonious combination of light and form. The building features a comprehensive lighting solution from Hide-a-lite, both indoors and outdoors, enhancing the living experience and creating a unique atmosphere. Hide-a-lite also participated in the lighting design process to ensure that the lighting accentuates the building's architecture. The developer, Newil&Bau, has set a new standard for resident services in the Finnish housing sector.
As Oy Töölön Meander welcomed its first residents in the autumn of 2024. The property includes 115 apartments, each with its own outdoor space. Residents can enjoy shared facilities such as a sauna, yoga studio, wine cellar, cinema, and coworking areas. Both rental cars and bicycles are also provided for residents.
In Töölön Meander's outdoor areas, functionality and aesthetics have been prioritized to create a safe and harmonious environment for residents. Hide-a-lite luminaires are used in stairwells, facades, courtyards, and communal spaces, giving the entire building complex a unified appearance. The lighting in the building's sauna area is designed to create a calming and warmly inviting atmosphere. Heatline luminaires under the sauna benches provide soft and indirect light that accentuates the sauna's materials and creates a relaxing ambiance without glare.
Outdoors, special attention has been paid to the lighting of pathways. Wall luminaires guide residents with soft light along safe routes. Recessed ground fixtures add visual effects by highlighting plantings and trees, giving the garden a vibrant look even after dark. On the facades, light sources have been directed to accentuate the building's architecture and sculptural details.Outdoor lighting has also been designed to minimize glare and disturbance to surrounding buildings. Dimming options provide both energy savings and enhanced comfort. In the stairwells, LED strips create elegant light and shadow plays on walls and ceilings, which guide residents into the building in a sophisticated manner. The chosen lighting solutions support Töölön Meander's architectural entirety and ensure that light and shadow elegantly complement the surrounding environment.
